Bully

From the controversial statements being made in the press about Rockstar's (Maker of Grand Theft Auto) latest game to be released in October here in the UK, you'd honestly think it was a pro-bulling game, wouldn't you?

Yeah, well your bloody wrong!

From IGN:
Bully puts players in control of 15 year-old Jimmy Hopkins -- a boy who has just begun his first year in the New England-based Bullworth Academy, and a guy who's charged with the mission of ridding the school of a number of its undesirable elements.
From INQ:
Director Liz Carnell of bullying.co.uk, said: "We'd hoped that Rockstar had ditched this game following our complaints about it a year ago. We don't think this game is likely to leave players with a warm and fuzzy feeling."
So what is the bloody problem with everyone, you would think that any organisation / charity / politician would actually do some research, rather than just take the name of the game and judge it.  Have you never heard of "Don't judge a book by it's cover"?

I have to say a letter from someone called Trevor to the INQ was the icing on the cake for me, brilliant letter.
Subject: Bully game

Please do more research. Rockstar has now released a trailer for the game, making it quite clear the game is about the main character making a stand against a school overrun with bullies.

Did you really think computer geeks (a common target group for bullies) would make a game promoting it?! LOL

Trevor

This all takes me back to the controversy over Manhunt and it's so called link to a Murder here in the UK, which actually wasn't played at all by the Killer but by the victim!

Another thing, all these games are marked as being either 18 or M, no one under the age of 18 should be able to purchase these, so shoot me if you want but to be honest the blame here should be squarely laid at the feet of the person/parent who purchased the game (I'd blame my sister for my nephew killing someone because of the game, rather than the game; because she bought it for him!).  Of course that's saying that you buy into the whole video game causes violence issue that I don't, but that's for another day and another blog :)

Video Games, Movies & Music reflect societies downward spiral, not the cause of it!
Next they will be saying PacMan is violent... oh! wait... already done.

I tend to believe that violence is carried out by real people in the real world, and that their psychological/sociological mindset is what drives them to it.
We are well aware of the proportion of society that are gullible and easily influenced, but they are still the minority. So when it comes to the ‘Moral majority’ insisting that the governing bodies (in this instance, ‘Rockstar’, the company that makes the game) pulling out all the stops and not releasing their product, we are trying to exert an element of control over people’s freedom of choice that is undermining our own ability to decide right from wrong. Do we really want to live in a society that makes all our decisions for us, because some immoral few can’t control their homicidal urges?
